Qvest and Outernet partner on the most advanced immersive space in the world

  • 01 November, 2022

UK/GER: Qvest and Outernet have partnered to establish a unique location in London, which is open to the public as of 1st November - featuring the world’s largest wrap-around screen installation, the Now Building offers visitors a unique media experience space as the core element of a new culture district in London’s Soho neighborhood. Qvest was responsible for the technical design of the large-scale and cross-media backbone for all event venues, as well as its delivery, vendor management and integration as Master Systems Integrator.

Visitors to Outernet in London can now enjoy a unique multi-sensory experience in a spectacular public atrium, based on the very latest immersive media technology: The Now Building contains an immense digital canvas with a 4-storey high, floor-to-ceiling, and 360-degree screen surface with 16K resolution. Extending over 2,100 square meters, it is the most advanced and largest media installation of its kind worldwide to date. With its particularly performant technology setup, the multimedia LED environment with 4D and interactive capabilities offers new possibilities for visually spectacular staging and creative storytelling. The Now Building and other parts of Outernet London have been used for exclusive events since autumn of 2021 - such as product launches, interactive exhibitions, and broadcast programs. From now on, the location for immersive media and cultural events in London's West End is also open to the public every day.

As consultant and Master Systems Integrator, Qvest was responsible for the entire design and implementation of a cross-functional technical operations and data center for all spaces of Outernet London. The core component of the operations center is a facility with content scheduling, automation control and real-time playback, monitoring and immersive audio processing. The cooperation was rounded off by intensive testing as well as training and support by the Qvest team for the operational staff of Outernet London.

Mike Whittaker, CTO of Outernet London: “What we have achieved with our teams at Outernet and Qvest is extraordinary and unique. It by far exceeds the usual technology solutions. Qvest’s understanding for our vision, methodical approach, and knowledge transfer during the process made them the natural choice to deliver this installation. We are very happy that clients and visitors of London can now enjoy this new center for culture and creativity which is spectacular in so many ways.”

Qvest also coordinated the installation, testing, and integration of essential elements of the media infrastructure, that were pre-defined by Outernet London - such as monitoring of the 360-degree LED displays and its control systems, real-time 3D rendering software from Ventuz outputting a total of 26K resolution, storage solutions from Dell, and IT routing systems from Cisco. The Qvest team ensured that the media infrastructure can be managed from a single operational facility within the Outernet site.

Thomas Müller, CTO of Qvest Group: “What makes this project so special among our numerous international media installations is that the audio-visually spectacular implementation can be experienced by the public. Crucial for this immersive experience in the Now Building is the intelligent orchestration of all tech components behind the scenes. We are proud to have realized this unique media space for concerts, brand events, and art with our consulting and technology experience.”

Invited guests could already attend exclusive events in the Now Building - such as UNICEF's 75th anniversary Blue Moon Gala celebrations or the launch of Paramount+. Visitors will be able to spontaneously enjoy the immersive media installation - like at the Dotcom Séance on every Sunday until early December 2022: a digital installation by Berlin-based artist Simon Denny, which explores technology’s sustained influence upon global cultural and political development, with particular focus on the tech industry.
