AUT/USA: The 2023 AES International Conference on Audio Archiving, Preservation & Restoration is set to get under way June 1-3, at the US Library of Congress National Conservation Center in Culpeper, Virginia.

The conference brings together researchers and specialists from around the world to discuss preservation issues and strategies to help reinforce the industry’s sustained conservation, restoration and archiving efforts.

Audio archiving, preservation and storage are critical practices for ensuring that valuable audio recordings are preserved for future generations and remain accessible for research, education and entertainment purposes.

At the event, Manuel Corn, NOA V.P. Global Sales & Marketing on June 2 at 8.30 EDT will address the audience with a presentation entitled, Synchronous and Asynchronous Collection, Manipulation, and Preservation of Metadata in Audio Archiving Projects.

During his discussion, Corn will highlight the importance of the vast number of information-rich metadata that is generated and collected during the process of transitioning from physical to digital sound documents, and how this metadata can provide essential details about each sound document in question.

In addition, Corn will provide an outline of the various sources, types, methods of collection and manipulation, and eventual fates of the various forms of metadata. He’ll place special attention on the significant difference of synchronous vs. asynchronous processes when archiving and annotating media content.

“Regardless of whether the metadata is intended for widespread and long-term use or limited to a specific time and audience,” says Corn.
“It plays a crucial role in ensuring that the sound records are preserved as well as made and kept accessible - and that beyond the confinements of the long-established BWF header,” he added.

The AES International Conference on Audio Archiving, Preservation & Restoration is a conference organized by the Audio Engineering Society that focuses on the preservation and restoration of audio recordings. The conference attracts researchers, engineers, archivists and other professionals in the field of audio preservation to discuss the latest developments and best practices in the field. Topics covered at the event include audio restoration techniques, digital preservation strategies, metadata standards and the challenges of preserving and restoring different types of audio recordings.
